Men's Golf Takes Second at West Region Invitational

Men's Golf Takes Second at West Region Invitational

The Pirates took second this week at the West Region Invitational hosted at Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown, Texas. Monday brought enjoyable weather and great course conditions at Berry Creek, setting the field up to fire low rounds in the first 36 holes of the tournament. Christian Rodriguez and Matthew Peesker led the first team of Pirates on Monday both in the top 10 after the first 36 holes. After shooting a four-over 76 in round one, Rodriguez fought back to shoot a two-under 70 in round two. Peesker shot 73-76 on day one making five birdies during his last nine holes of round one and two more during round two. Leading the second team of Pirates, Rex Newsom shot 74-72 to finish Monday at two-over par.

Tuesday brought strong winds, challenging the field to make smart decisions around the course and secure a spot on the leaderboard despite tough conditions. Leading the Pirates, Christian Rodriguez fired another two-under - 70 to secure a third-place finish, and Matthew Peesker with a three-under 69 to finish tied for fourth overall. Rex Newsom finished in sixth place shooting a one-over 73 in the final round earning his first top-10 finish. Bryce Steimert also played well in round three shooting a one-over 73 to secure a 10th-place finish individually and help the team to a second-place finish. The Pirates came in second to Trinity who won the event by eight strokes shooting an 877 total for the tournament.

The Pirates will compete again at the SCAC Championship at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas on April 17th and 18th.
