Cowart paces Pirates to top five finish at West Cup

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Consistency and patience paid off for Jordan Cowart and the Southwestern University men's golf team as both earned top 5 finishes at the 2014 West Cup on Tuesday.

The Pirates finished fourth with rounds of 312-305-306 for a total 931 to finish just 19 strokes behind first place Redlands who shot a 904. Top teams from the NCAA West Region converged on Bear Creek Country Club as Claremont finished second with a 912 while host LaVerne was one stroke behind with a 913 team score and 10 strokes better than the Pirates.

Cowart finished fifth as he posted three straight rounds of 75 to finish the prestigious tournament with a 225 total score. He saw birdies fall on No. 11 and No. 14 while adding a birdie on No. 13 during his first round on Monday.

Cody Hebert posted one of the best turnaround scores shooting a 73 during his final round after an 84 and 74 on day one. Herbert's scores gave him a top 20 finish as he finished 231 for the tournament.

Senior Cameron Button carded rounds of 76-77-80 for a total 233 as he was joined by most of the field with a higher third round score. Button finished tied for 23rd to give Southwestern three top 25 finishers.

James Grachos rounded out the scoring for the Pirates as he improved each day from an 81-79 on Monday. He was also able to shave an extra stroke from his Tuesday round carding a 78 to total 238.

Southwestern continues action over the weekend in a dual match with University of Dallas. The Pirates will serve as the host with golfers teeing off Saturday at Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown.
