Men's Golf Finishes 2nd at the Schreiner Shootout

Men's Golf Finishes 2nd at the Schreiner Shootout

Monday morning of the Schreiner Shootout was about as bad of golf weather as there could be, it was cloudy, 40 degrees and wind gusts were 15 miles per hour, making it extremely difficult to put a solid round together. The clubs were cold, the ball was hard and hands were freezing. Every team headed into Comanche Trace knew that the weather would not be suitable for golf, but the Pirates' attitude going into the tournament was the best it could be. The team recognized that in order to place well, they had to be patient and manage the conditions. And they did just that.

The first round on Monday went about as well as it could have, four of the five starters for the Pirates' shot 6+ or better, all things considered, it was a good day. Jr. Christian Rodriguez described his round as "scrambling for his life", which was the perfect definition of the effort it took to survive the weather conditions. Thomas Kuznar had the best opening round for the Pirates' with a 76, Nicholas Hoisington and Rodriguez would follow Kuznar by one stroke along with Logan Pullin ending his first day with 78.

The consistent performance by the Pirates' landed them in second place by the end of the first round, only three shots back from the leader, Concordia University (TX).

Although the cold temperatures remained, the wind finally died down on Tuesday morning allowing more distance off of the tee and more aggressive approach shots. The calmer conditions drastically helped the Pirates'. Fr. Bryce Stiemert improved by seven strokes from Monday to Tuesday shooting a 76 in his final round. Rodriguez and Hosington also improved. Rodriguez fired a 74 in his final round which won him third place overall in the field and only a couple shots back from placing first overall. Hoisington also received 5th place honors at the tournament, ending his day three over par and only a few shots off the top spot as well.

The Pirates' survived the worst of the conditions and the continuous effort across both rounds gained them a great second place finish at the Schreiner Shootout.

The Pirates' Men's and Women's Golf team takes a trip to Georgia to play in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, March 16th - 20th.
