Cowart rallies Pirates at historic Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jordan Cowart helped pace the Southwestern University men's golf team rally for a top five finish Tuesday at the prestigious Gordin Classic.

Cowart carded a first round 69 on Monday during his morning round to sit near the leaders heading into the afternoon's second round. After struggling in the afternoon, Cowart rebounded Tuesday to post a 73 on the course and finish 8th in one of the nation's toughest fields during the fall. He was also just 13 strokes behind the individual champion, Ty Palmer of Guilford who also took home team honors.

Southwestern as a team saw improved scores through most of its lineup on Tuesday to rally from 7th and finish 5th in the team standings. The Pirates posted an even 900 and were just seven strokes from Methodist who finished fourth. Guilford ran away with team honors to finish with a score of 872 while Rhodes finished runner-up with an 889.

Sutherland Stith and Cody Hebert were consistent through their three rounds as Stith scores each day were separated by just two strokes to finish in the top 25. Hebert carded identical rounds of 77 before posting a 74 on Tuesday as he tied for 27th.

Tyler Gammill finished tied for 40th with a 233 as he rounded out the scoring for the Pirates.

Connor Murphy rallied to post a 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 238 in the clubhouse as the Pirates fifth golfer.

The gauntlet continues for the Pirates as they travel to Flowery Branch, Ga., for the Oglethorpe Invitational October 6-7.
