Golfers Snag Second at West Region Invitational

The Southwestern men's and women's golf teams improved one spot over day one to finish in second place at the West Region Invitational.

The men's team secured second place after a team score of 921 with three consistent rounds (309-306-306). Jordan Cowart came out strong with an opening round of 73 and ended as the highest Pirate finisher, coming in fifth place overall with 229 strokes (73-79-77). Trinity's Kalen Vos won the event with 222 strokes.

Cameron Button was hot on Cowart's heels, finishing sixth with a 231 (79-76-76). James Charles (80-76-76) and Michael Gebhardt (77-75-80) were just behind, tying for seventh with 232 strokes and Cody Hebert rounded out Southwestern's play with 247 strokes (91-79-77).

On the women's side, the Pirates emerged from the first round in third place, but jumped up to second in the final round. Keeley Coburn was unstoppable on day one, tying for the lowest round with a 78. She ended the Invitational in fifth place overall as the highest Pirate finisher with 162 strokes (78-84). Kelsey Coburn and Karissa Speck were right behind, tying for sixth place with 163 strokes. Bernice Leonard finished tied for 28th (175) and Korey Coburn tied for 30th (176).

Also competing for the Pirates were Lauren Boone who came in tied for 18th with a 169 (85-84). Katie KcCance finished tied for 45th (194) and Jenny Smith who withdrew.

The men and women will spend the next two weeks gearing up for the SCAC Championships beginning on April 20th in Shreveport, La.
