Men's Golf In First After First Day at West Region Invitational

GEORGETOWN, Texas — In the friendly home confines of Berry Creek Country Club, Southwestern men's golf led the field through the first two rounds of the West Region Invitational. 

Southwestern opened the competition with the best round of the day, scoring a 286 to lead second-place Texas Lutheran by nine strokes. The Pirates fell off that torrid pace but still expanded up their lead, scoring a 293 in the second round to finish with a combined score of 579, ending the day 20 strokes ahead of Texas Lutheran. 

The Pirates finished three in the top five, led by Austin Kelley, whose two rounds of 70 and 71 put him atop the individual leaderboard with a score of 141. Kelley finished the first day with six birdies and made 25 pars, excelling in par 4 scoring by finishing three under. 

Teammate Colin O'Hern scored a first-day best round of 69 in the opening round, then scored a 73 in the second, finishing the day in second with a score of 142. O'Hern tied Texas Lutheran's Chad Maus for the lead in birdies with eight. 

Hunter Holloway shot a 75 and 72 to finish the day in fourth with a score of 147, recording four birdies and making par 24 times. Christian Rodriguez finished the day tied for 10th, opening the day with a 72, then falling off that pace with a 78 in the second round for a score of 150. Nicholas Hoisington finished just inside the top 25 with a score of 155, finishing tied for 24th. 

Logan Pullen, Jack Carroll, and Ian Cameron competed in the event as individuals. Pullen sits in a tie for 17th with a score of 151, followed by Carroll in a tie for 29th at 158, and Cameron in 35th with a score of 162. 

After Southwestern and Texas Lutheran, Hardin-Simmons finished third with a score of 600, followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor at 602, then Concordia at 604, Schreiner at 633, and Howard Payne at 634. The event ends with a final round tomorrow.
