Pirate golfers close fall season with top 5 finish

SPRING BRANCH – James Grachos helped the Southwestern University men's golf team stage a comeback Tuesday to finish fourth at the Alamo City Classic, hosted by Trinity University at River Crossing Golf Club.

The Pirates grabbed the fourth place finish after posting a score of 603 during the two-day event. Concordia led from start to finish with a total of 587, while Texas Lutheran shot a 591 to finish second and defending national champion University of Texas-Tyler finished third with a 598.

Grachos fired an even par 72 on Tuesday to complete a scorecard of 147 and earn a seventh place finish. Chance Cathey of Texas Lutheran took home the individual title as he was just seven strokes better than Grachos for the tournament with a 140.

Overall Southwestern place three individuals in the top 20 as Jordan Cowart and Cameron Button finished tied for 15th. Cowart was consistent with back-to-back rounds of 76, while Button slipped with a 79 on day two and a 73 during Monday's first round giving the duo a total of 152.

Not only did the top of the field fire similar scores, but two Pirates battling for the fifth team score were just two strokes behind Button and Cowart to finish tied for 21st. Cody Hebert and Andrew DeHennis both shot a 74-80-154 helping the Pirates to the fourth place team finish.

The tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Pirates who captured a team title at the John Bohmann Invitational.

Cowart earned three top 10 finishes during the fall for the Pirates, including a runner-up at the John Bohmann Invite in September.

Southwestern opens the spring NCAA season in Austin at the Concordia Invitational February 17-18.
