Gammill earns first win as men’s golf finishes second

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – Tyler Gammill carded the lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday to hold off a trio of challengers and win the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Invitational.

Gammill posted a 68 on Tuesday to finish 139 (-5) for the tournament as the first-year golfer won is first career tournament. He posted a 71 on Monday and was just one shot back heading into the final round and more than covered helping the Pirates get back into team contention as well.

Sutherland Stith joined Gammill with Tuesday's low round as he posted a 68 as well. However a 75 on Monday saw Stith walk into the clubhouse with a two-day total of 143 (-1) to finish tied for fifth, his career best finish as well.

The Pirates entered Tuesday in fourth place after a team score of 293, but were just three shots behind the leader Centre College. With Stith and Gammill's solid final rounds Southwestern tied Oglethorpe on Tuesday with a 286 falling just one shot behind the host to finish second.

Connor Murphy narrowly missed a top 20 finish as he tied for 21st with two consistent rounds of back-to-back 74's.

Jordan Cowart rounded out the Pirate scoring with rounds of 73-78 to finish +7 for the tournament.

The Pirates will return to action Oct. 27-28 in their final fall tournament at the Abilene Intercollegiate at Diamondback Golf Club. The tournament is hosted by Hardin-Simmons.
