Southwestern men within striking distance after day one

BOERNE, Texas – Second round struggles saw the Southwestern University men's golf team hold on to third place after day one of the 2014 SCAC Men's Golf Championships Monday at Tapatio Springs Golf Club.

On the men's side of the tournament the teams played 36 holes and the Pirates started their afternoon round two in first place. The duo of James Grachos and Jordan Cowart tied for the low round of the day with scores of 69.

However, the afternoon saw the Southwestern men's scores rise into the upper 70's after fighting through a morning drizzle.

Grachos will play in the final pairing during Tuesday's final round of 18 as he sits just five shots behind the individual leader – Zach Oliver of Schreiner University. The first-year Pirate tallied eight birdies in his first round to finish -3, but was able to just card a pair of birdies in the afternoon.

Cowart was near flawless in the morning with just three birdies and no bogeys to post a 69 (-3) and share the first round lead. However in second round looked much different with a pair of bogeys and two doubles as he moved to +3 (147) for the tournament.

Cameron Button and Cody Hebert both stand in the top 20 as Button finished tied 12th with a 74-76-150. Despite the afternoon struggles Button stands just 10 strokes behind the leader.

Southwestern will be in the final pairings starting at 8:40 a.m. off No. 10 as the tournament's final round begins at 8 a.m. for both men and women.
