Cowart and Grachos earn top 10 finishes at Championships

BOERNE, Texas – A comeback wasn't in the books Tuesday for the Southwestern men's golf team as they finished third at the 2014 SCAC Men's Golf Championships at Tapatio Springs Golf Club.

Jordan Cowart tied for second place as he pushed to -1 (71) to finish his three rounds for a total of 218. Cowart and Cody Hebert both shot 71 on Tuesday as they attempted a comeback that had seen the Pirates hold a first place lead after round one Monday morning.

However, Schreiner University ran away with the title as Zach Oliver claimed the individual title for the Mountaineers. Oliver bested Cowart by 10 strokes as he finished with a 208 – a SCAC Championship record for a three round tournament.

James Grachos felt the up-and-down of the final round as he had battled back to get under par midway through his round. The rookie continued to battle as he made the turn with a birdie to start the back nine, but ended with a +2 (74) in his final round to finish at 219.

Cody Hebert helped the Pirates make a final round push finishing with a 71 in his final round. Hebert finished in 14th with a 225.

All-American Cameron Button, finished tied for 17 as he fired a final round 80 to finish 230 and was followed by Andrew DeHennis who also posted an 80 on Tuesday. DeHennis finished at 238 for the championship.

Trinity finished second in the team standings at 887 as the Pirates finished with a score of 892 edging out Centenary at 897. Champion Schreiner posted a score of 866 with only one golfer over par in Tuesday's final round.

Southwestern will wait to see their fate and if they earn a return trip to the NCAA National Championships in Greensboro, N.C., May 13-16.
