#17 Southwestern opens NCAA Championship

#17 Southwestern opens NCAA Championship

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – One round is in the books at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship and Southwestern sits in 32nd place overall (322 strokes).

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the team field with a two-over-par 288 at Mendon Golf Club.

The par-72 Midvale course proved challenging for the Pirates early. Through the front nine Southwestern averaged nearly six-over-par without a birdie.

Things quickly improved on the back nine as Devon Horne snagged the first Pirate birdie of the tournament on the par five #10 and followed with back-to-back pars.

Challenging weather conditions made play difficult the rest of the way as Southwestern headed to the clubhouse in 34th place with 15 teams yet to complete play.

Devon Horne led the way individually with a four over par 76 while Tyler Gammill was close behind at seven over par. Cody Hebert posted an 83 for the first round, Connor Murphy an 84 and Andrew DeHennis shot 86.

Southwestern will move over to Mendon Golf Club for round two beginning on Wednesday and remain paired with Methodist and Hope.

The 41-team, 210-man tournament is played over two courses in Rochester, N.Y.; Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club. After 36 holes, the field will be trimmed to the top-15 teams, plus the top-five individuals not playing on one of the top-15 teams. The remaining 36 holes will be contested at Midvale.
