Cowart claims 3rd as Pirates earn best team finish at NCAAs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jordan Cowart battled to the highest ever finish in program history as he helped lead the Southwestern University men's golf team to its best finish during Friday's final round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.

Cowart finished tied for third as scores rose on the final day with the senior finishing at 2-over, 290, for the championship. He bested teammate Cameron Button's fifth place finish from last season while Button finished tied for 38th with a 304.

Bobby Holden of Redlands University won the individual championship with a 279 as Schreiner University's Cheyne Kendall finished second just two strokes ahead of Cowart at 288. Schreiner also claimed the team title with a 1185 as they held off Oglethorpe for the 2014 National Championship.

The Pirates posted a team score of 1212 as their highest total of the tournament came on Friday with a 314 after finishing Thursday's suspended round with a 303. The score was five strokes from earning a top 10 finish as Transylvania, Berry and LaGrange all tied for eighth with scores of 1207.

Cody Hebert posted the best score for the Pirates during Friday's final round with a 76. Hebert finished tied for 56th as he carded a 309 total for the four day tournament.

James Grachos and Andrew DeHennis tied at 74th as the duo finished with individual scores of 319. Grachos, a first-year Pirate, joined Cowart as a top 10 finisher at the SCAC Championships while Cowart improved from last year's 78th place finish.
