RICHARDSON, Texas – Southwestern’s men’s tennis team opened up their fall competition on Friday at the ITA Regionals held on the University of Texas at Dallas campus. The Pirates went 2-7 in singles matches and 2-2 in doubles in the first round and 0-4 in the second/first consolation rounds in singles and 2-1 in second round doubles.

Sophomore Alex Lam and junior C.J. Esquivel had the best days for the Pirates with both winning their first round singles matches and the duo taking their first-round doubles match.

Lam defeated Austin College’s Daniel Jackson in his first round match, easily handling him in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. The win advanced Lam to the second round where he fell to McMurry’s will Davis in a hotly contested match, falling in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.

Esquivel took down McMurry’s Ben Gilley in two, 3-6, 5-4 (ret.) and then advanced to the second round to face UTD’s Ishikawa and fell in two sets 6-2, 6-4.

In their first doubles match of the fall season, Lam/Esquivel defeated UTD’s Gonzalez/Contello 8-2 to advance on to the second round where they faced Williams/Olivares. The duo emerged victorious, 8-5, and will continue doubles action Saturday afternoon.

First-year Andrew Clarage looked impressive in his first collegiate match, out-lasting Schreiner’s 6-2, 7-6 to be the only SU first-year to advance to the second round. Clarage was defeated in the second round by Trinity’s John Runge 6-2, 6-1.

Clarage took his first round momentum into doubles action as he partnered up with sophomore Alexander Reinsch. The duo advanced to the second round after defeating Howard Payne’s Le/Flores 8-4. McMurry’s #2 doubles of Davis/Rainwater bested the pair in the second round 8-3.

First-years Nate Roberts, Andrew Olsson and Corbett Austin join Reinsch in singles action tomorrow morning at 10:30 am after receiving a bye in their first round consolation matches after dropping their first round matches.
