Men's Tennis Loses Exhibition to NJCAA Champion Tyler Junior College

TYLER, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates men's tennis team faced the defending back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association National Champions in an exhibition, playing tough but losing 9-0.

Drew Shuvalov and Carlos Esteban Rodero stayed within three at No. 1 doubles against Jaycer Lyeons and Cash Hanzlik, losing 8-5. Hunter Bajoit and Vesko Lekovic lost 8-4 to Jeff Guerrero and Alan Magadan at No. 2 doubles. Alexander Joseph and Steven Tibbers were solid at No. 3 doubles but lost 8-6 to Ryo Minakata and Alvaro Saint Martin.

"All three lines of doubles played fantastic tonight, and it's nice to see our work at practice come together when the lights come on," head coach Billy Porter said.

Hunter Bajoit took Hanzlik to a tiebreak in the second set of their No. 2 singles match, losing 6-1, 7-6. Lekovic lost 6-3, 6-1 to Lyeons in No. 1 singles. Joseph fell 6-2, 6-3 to Minakata in No. 3 singles, Esteban Rodero was defeated 6-0, 6-2 by Magadan at No. 4 singles. Tibbetts was bested by Guerrero 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 singles, and Nicolas Guarin lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

"Hunter played the best singles he's played in his time here. Taking the No. 2 overall recruit in the nation last year to a tiebreak was huge," Porter said. "Our guys played fearless tennis and didn't let the stage of playing the back-to-back defending National Champions impact them one bit."

Southwestern will host Schreiner on Thursday, April 1, at 5:00 p.m.
