Men's Tennis Defeats LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas — Southwestern men's tennis opened its pair of matches Saturday with a 7-2 victory over LeTourneau.

Hunter Bajoit and Vesko Lekovic put the Pirates on the board first with an 8-2 victory over Rodrigo Vazquez and Nathan Schmidt in No. 2 doubles. LeTourneau prevented the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win by Julian Lee and Patrick Baney over Drew Shuvalov and Carlos Esteban Rodero in No. 1 doubles.

Alexander Joseph and Steven Tibbetts followed with an 8-1 victory over Miles Grubb and Jonah McGinty in No. 3 doubles.

"We came out firing on all cylinders in doubles and a late bad break got us at No. 1," head coach Billy Porter said. "No. 2 and No. 3 played some of the best we've seen all year."

Hunter Bajoit opened singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vazquez in No. 2 singles. Joseph followed with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Baney from the No. 3 spot. Tibbetts clinched the match for Southwestern with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Jeffrey Golladay in No. 5 singles. Esteban Rodero won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Lekovic dropped a three-set match to Lee in the top spot 6-4, 1-6, 6-7. Anton Borovik closed the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Grubbs in No. 6 singles.

"Vesko was up 5-1 match point in the third and made a loose error he just never recovered from. He battled until the very end but just didn't play smart enough to win," Porter said. "Anton looked good again today. I was pleased to see him get another win at the bottom of our lineup."
