GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern men's tennis team had a local, rivalry match against a tough Concordia team at Henderson Courts on Wednesday evening. The Pirates found themselves trailing late into each of the three doubles matches but persevered and battled back to go into singles with a 3-0 lead. The Pirates were able to weather the storm in singles and hold off the tornados for the 6-3 win.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bernardo Clemente and Parth Patel finished first with a tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles, as Patel had the winning volley on match point after Clemente's serve forced a weak return.
  • Travis Rafferty and Jared Burton followed with another big tiebreaker win at No. 3 for a 2-0 lead, and Snyman and Roy, playing together for the first time this season, capped off the sweep at No. 1, with Snyman using a big first serve on match point to secure an 8-6 win over the seventh-ranked doubles team in the region.
  • Concordia earned the first three singles points to tie the score, but Ryan Flanagan showed some great senior leadership at No. 5 singles, coming from behind to gut out a 7-5, 7-6 win after being down a break twice in the second set.
  • The score was 4-3 and Roy and Joseph Snyman, who won a big match at No. 1 doubles, were the last two left playing at No. 1 and No. 2. Roy is ranked No. 4 in the latest regional rankings and played the No. 3 ranked player, All-American Joshua Bode, ranked No. 10 nationally. Roy was down a set, but dug down and battled back for a huge 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win for the fifth and decisive point, improving his record to 6-1 against nationally ranked players this season.
  • Snyman ended the match with a gritty 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win to make the final 6-3.
