Men's Tennis Drops Two Third-Set Tiebreakers in 5-2 Loss

SAN ANTONIO — Southwestern men's tennis lost a 5-2 decision to NCAA Division II St. Mary's University in a match that came down to the wire and could have gone either way.

The Pirates dropped all three doubles matches, losing No. 1 and 3 by a score of 6-2, and No. 2 doubles 6-4; falling behind 1-0 with NCAA Division II scoring rules that counts all of doubles as one point. In singles, Southwestern held its own in singles, taking four matches to three sets.

Hunter Bajoit picked up a three-set win (7-6, 2-6, 6-1) in No. 2 singles against Nicolas Llosa, and Alexander Joseph won in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) against Brendan Brown in the No. 3 spot.

"We struggled with the speed of play in doubles, and they did a great job exposing our weaknesses," head coach Billy Porter says. "Hunter and Alex both played exceptional tennis and got us two huge points. The difference between us winning 4-3 to losing 2-5 was losing two third-set tiebreakers 7-5."

Southwestern drops to 2-1 with the loss. The Pirates will return home to play Schreiner tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
