Bajoit and Rambojun Advance to ITA Regional Championship Matches

SAN ANTONIO — Senior Hunter Bajoit became the first Southwestern men's tennis player to advance to the ITA Regional Singles Championship in program history, defeating two Trinity players on the third day of competition.

Bajoit opened with a tough match against Hao Nguyen, dropping the first set 2-6 and recovering with a 7-5 victory before Nguyen retired from the match. Bajoit then defeated Alessio Azzalini 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the championship match.

"Hunter played some incredible tennis today. Both Trinity players he beat in singles were very strong," Southwestern head men's tennis coach Billy Porter says. "They were completely different players stylistically, and the way Hunter adapted was remarkable."

Bajoit also advanced to the championship match in doubles, teaming with Hemanshu Rambojun to defeat a pair of LeTourneau teams. Bajoit and Rambojun bested Rodrigo Vazquez and Miles Grubbs 8-3, then defeated Julian Lee and Patrick Baney, the tournament's top seed, 8-5 to advance to the ITA Regional Doubles Championship for the second time in three years.

"Hunter and Hemanshu took down the No. 1 seed, a very strong team with limited weaknesses," Porter says. "We made some adjustments down 1-4, and they did a great job executing them for the 8-5 win."

Bajoit will face Cameron Krimbill in the singles championship match featuring the 2021 SCAC Co-Players of the Year. Then, Bajoit and Rambojun will play Trinity's Nguyen and Christian Settles for the doubles championship.

"We know how challenging of a day we have ahead tomorrow, and fitness will play a key part," Porter says. "I couldn't be happier for Hunter, who works extremely hard, and I'm excited for him and Hemanshu to earn a trip back to the Finals."
