At ITA Men's Regional Tournament

Men's Players From 11 Division III Schools Compete For Singles, Doubles Berth

RICHARDSON, TX (09.25-28,09) – University of Texas at Dallas teammates Alex Ishikawa and Clint Laukhof led the way for the UTD men's tennis team this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Sub-Regional Tournament, hosted by UTD.

.jpg" alt="" />Ishikawa and Laukhof, both freshmen, teamed up to make just one round short of the tournament quarterfinals in a doubles field that included 48 teams. Ishikawa and Laukhof knocked off a team from powerhouses UT-Tyler and Trinity on their way to third fourth round before falling to the eventual tournament doubles champion Cocanougher/Kowal from Trinity.

UTD served as the host school for one of eight Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Sub-Regional Tournaments across the nation. The Tournament, which featured 98 men's singles entries and 48 doubles entries, was played on courts at four locations near the UTD campus. UTD head  tennis coach Bryan Whitt is serving as tournament director.

In the singles competition, Ishikawa and Laukhof again made the strongest showing for UTD. Ishikawa knocked off C.J. Equivel from Southwestern, 3-6, 5-4 (ret.); then beat Trevor Sipos of Trinity, 7-5, 7-5, before losing to David Ashlock of UT-Tyler in the fourth round. Laukhof won his opening match over Ryan Prather of Howard Payne, 6-2, 6-2; before dropping close 7-5, 6-4 match with Brad Fenter from UT-Tyler.

Other UTD players who made it past their first match were singles player Andrew Gonzalez, who defeated Southwestern's Nate Roberts, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-5; and doubles team Camden Cornwell and Brian Bittner, which knocked off a team from Austin College, 8-2.

Division III universities sending players to Richardson included Austin College, Hardin-Simmons University, Hendrix College; Howard Payne University, Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Schreiner University, Southwestern University, UT Dallas, UT Tyler and Trinity University.
