Pirates cruise to fifth place at Championships

SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University men's tennis team won back-to-back matches on a humid Saturday afternoon to claim fifth place at the 2014 SCAC Men's Tennis Championships.

The Pirates blanked both Centenary and Austin College 5-0 en route to the consolation round championship.

In the morning match against Centenary the Pirates knocked off a short-handed Gents team 5-0 with a pair of wins in doubles before Alex Wong won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to clinch the match.

Wong was the first and only finisher in singles action as the Pirates cruised to the win.

The afternoon match saw the Pirates dominate again on the court sweeping all three doubles matches. Derek Grass teamed with Niko Snovely for an 8-2 at No. 1 doubles as Edward Yu and Alvaro Rojas won at No. 2 doubles by the same score.

Snovely closed out his impressive rookie season with the Pirates with his ninth straight win a 12th victory of the season at No. 1 singles. He cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position to help give Southwestern the win.

Egan Cornachione finished off his opponent after an early set-back at No. 2 singles 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Cornachione completed an 8-6 singles record on the season with the win.

The Pirates end the season at 8-8 on the year after claiming fifth place at the SCAC Championships.
