Men's Tennis Defeats Schreiner

Men's Tennis Defeats Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern men's tennis shook off an early doubles loss to defeat the Schreiner Mountaineers 8-1 for their fourth consecutive win against a conference opponent.

The Pirates mixed up their lineup, and Schreiner took advantage with Carson Kirk and Austin Cervantes scoring an 8-6 win over Southwestern's Jared Burton and Hemanshu Rambojun at No. 1 doubles.

Southwestern recovered with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Hunter Bajoit and Steven Tibbetts scored an 8-4 win over Dennis Miller and Mario Gallinar at No. 2 doubles. Oscar Roy and Carlos Esteban Rodero defeated Quinten Robertson and Max Schechter 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

"After taking a tough loss at No. 1 doubles, our guys did a good job of weathering the storm with the momentum Schreiner had going into singles," Southwestern head tennis coach Billy Porter says.

At the top of the singles lineup, Bajoit and Tibbetts secured hard-fought victories for Southwestern at the top two spots. Bajoit bested Kirk 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Tibbetts won 6-3, 6-4 against Miller.

"Hunter and Steven both got their opponents' best shots and did enough to find a way to win," Porter says. "Their teammates not playing did an exceptional job supporting them to get them to the finish line."

In the middle of the lineup, Roy defeated Gallinar 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Travis Rafferty posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Cervantes at No. 4 singles. Daniel Haley scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jonathan Barragan at No. 5 singles, and Rambojun made his singles debut with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Robertson.

"Hemanshu played in his first-ever dual match for singles and got a win," Porter says. "I couldn't be happier for him as he's worked hard for that repetition and made the most of the opportunity today."

The No. 23-ranked Southwestern men's tennis team improves to 12-6 with the win. The Pirates will play an exhibition against Midwestern State on Saturday.
