Southwestern University Men's Tennis played a competitive match against the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor yesterday, February 22, 2023. The UMHB Crusaders put up a tough fight but fell to the Pirates 9-0.

In the first three matches of doubles, the matches were close but the Pirates were able to sweep all three. Going into singles up 3-0 was huge for the team! Coach Porter was enthused by the way the men performed in doubles. "Doubles was tight, but we did a great job of not trying to do too much in the later part of the matches. Our experience was the difference in those big moments," said Coach Porter.

Freshman Bernardo Clemente got his first win at line one singles for the team. This was a great win for Clemente, and shows off the work he has been putting in. Coach Porter was extremely proud of Clemente and stated, "Bernie got a much needed win at #1 Singles and held his own in a back and forth battle. I thought he learned a lot from his last match that he implemented into this one which paid dividends." We can expect much more from Clemente as the season progresses.

Sophomore Oscar Roy (line three) and Junior Ryan Flanagan (line five) both had battles during the first set. Both Roy and Flanagan were able to fight through the first set and win the second with ease. Captain Daniel Haley said, "Oscar and Ryan had close first sets and took over in the second." These two wins really picked up the energy across the board for the Pirates. Captain Daniel Hayley also had a solid win at singles, gaining another point for the team!

This was a successful match for the men's tennis team. The Pirates' all played hard and got the results they wanted, a 9-0 sweep.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Conference tournament, April 28-30. Hosted on the Pirates' home courts!
