ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — In an indoor match between two top-10 ranked men's tennis programs, the No. 10 Southwestern Pirates were swept by the No. 9 N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops 9-0.

N.C. Wesleyan opened with an 8-1 victory in No. 2 doubles, with John Falke and Max Robinson besting Anton Borovik and Hemanshu Rambojun. The Battling Bishops followed that with a pair of 8-3 victories in No. 1 and 3 doubles.

Johnny Acosta and Juan Vallejo defeated Hunter Bajoit and Vesko Lekovic, and Jared Burton and Carlos Esteban Rodero lost to Tshepo Mosarwa and Thato Holmes.

"We were completely out of sync in doubles and failed to do the basic little things right," Southwestern head tennis coach Billy Porter says. "Singles was better but still not great. However, we did fight extremely hard and competed until the very end."

The Battling Bishops carried that momentum over to singles, opening with a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Vallejo over Borovik in No. 3 doubles. Then, Bajoit dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Acosta in No. 1 doubles to clinch the game.

Falke defeated Lekovic 6-2, 4-6, 3-4 ret. in No. 2 singles. Esteban Rodero battled hard with a 7-6 loss in the first set, then dropped the second 6-1 at No. 4 singles against Roberto Puig. Steven Tibbetts lost 6-4, 7-5 to Augusto Roca in No. 5 singles, and Jared Burton closed the match with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Diego Segovia at No. 6 singles.

"It was a fun match to be a part of with an electric atmosphere and crowd," Porter says. "It was a super clean match, and they were just the better team."

Southwestern will play another nationally-ranked team tomorrow, facing No. 25 Christopher Newport University.
