Men's Tennis Scores 9-0 Victory Over Howard Payne

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern men's tennis got solid performances from the back end of their lineup to shutout Howard Payne University with a 9-0 victory. 

Hunter Bajoit and Millan Fernandes opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Landon Ferree and Gavin Fountain in No. 1 doubles. Alexander Joseph and Steven Tibbetts held Nicholas Crawford and Romeo Rubio scoreless in an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Carlos Esteban and Nicolas Guarin closed doubles with an 8-2 victory over Micah Hunter and Tevin Stevens. 

The Pirates carried the momentum into singles. Steven Tibbetts opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Romeo Rubeo in No. 3 singles. Max Pearson followed suit, winning in straight sets over Nicholas Crawford in No. 4 singles for the clinch. 

Guarin followed his doubles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stevens in No. 6 singles. Fernandes downed Fountain 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 singles. Esteban bested Alexander Shelton 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, and Vesko Lekovic defeated Hunter Green 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. 

"Nico Guarin had himself a day. He played both matches with great energy, and I loved the way he competed," head coach Billy Porter said. "Millan had a good day and did a great job closing at the net in doubles and finished singles on a high note. Carlos was steady again and played sound tennis earning us two big points." 

Southwestern remained undefeated at 8-0 with the victory. Howard Payne dropped to 0-13 this season. The Pirates will travel tomorrow to face Austin College and Tyler Junior College.
