Men's tennis tops Hardin-Simmons, falls to No. 5 Trinity

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts. The Pirates rolled to a 7-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons to start the day, but suffered a 9-0 setback to No. 5 Trinity in the nightcap.

Southwestern (6-3) will return to the court on Tuesday, March 8, as it hosts Rhodes. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.


MATCH ONE

In the first contest, Southwestern received contributions throughout its lineup to roll to the five-point win.

The Pirates won all three doubles matchups and earned wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles.

Haluki Nakayama dispatched of B.J. Farmakis in straight sets at the third spot, while Alonso Fernandez registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kennan Nash at the fifth position. David Strong also logged a 6-2, 6-0 triumph versus Andrew Eurek at the sixth spot.

Grant Gideon clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ben Gutierrez at No. 2 singles.

MATCH TWO

In the nightcap, fifth-ranked Trinity proved to be too much for Southwestern.

The Pirates fell behind after dropping all three doubles contests. The Tigers then won all six doubles matchups in straight sets.
