GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern men's tennis team kicked off the 2014 season in upset fashion Saturday knocking off NCAA Division II, Dallas Baptist 7-2 at the Marvin D. Henderson Tennis Courts.
The Pirates (1-0) jumped out to a quick start taking all three doubles matches from Dallas Baptist (0-1). Edward Yu and Alvaro Rojas handled business at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 win while Sam McCready and Egan Cornachione picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position.
At No. 1 doubles Niko Snovely and Derek Grass were 8-6 winners as well.
Heading into singles action Southwestern dominated at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles to clinch the overall victory.
Yu quickly won at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-4, while Snovely also fared well at the No. 1 spot. Snovely took down Anthony Burch, 6-3, 6-4, while Cornachione gave the Pirates the 6-0 lead which clinched the match winning 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore, Derek Grass pushed the Pirate score to the eventual final with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
The Pirates return to the court Thursday when they host Howard Payne at 2 p.m.
