SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Pirate men's tennis team may have gone 1-2 over the weekend, but played well against some extremely tough competition.
SU opened with a big win, 8-1, over Austin College. The Pirates easily won two of three doubles matches and then swept singles play. Alex Lam and Alexander Reinsch (pictured) both had dominating victories. Lam won 6-2, 6-1 and Reinsch won 6-2, 6-2 in singles and the duo took thier doubles match 8-1.
Day two pitted the Pirates against power-house Trinity, falling 8-1. Southwestern dropped all three doubles matches but were in the game the entire way, falling 8-3, 8-4, and 8-2. Despite losing his opening set 3-6, Lam turned around and was able to outlast Mayer in #1 singles, winning the second set 6-3 and tiebreaker 11-9. Andy Clarage put up a good fight in #3 singles but ultimately fell 6-2, 7-5.
As day three got underway the Pirates squared off with Colorado College. Lam and Reinsch continued to play well, winning #1 doubles 8-3 over Burt/Zen-Ruffinen, but SU wasn't able to secure another win as they went into singles play down 2-1.
Lam also won his singles match, coming back from behind to win in a tie breaker 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Reinsch wasn't able to pull out the win, falling in a tie breaker 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. Clarage out-performed Zen-Ruffinen 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 in #3 singles, but the Pirates dropped the final three matches in straight sets to fall 6-3.
Southwestern sits at 5-7 on the year after the weekend and return to action on April 14th to face UT Dallas at home beginning at 2 p.m.
