Men’s Tennis Takes Down UMHB with Strong Singles Play

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to secure a 6-3 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday afternoon. The win improves SU to 3-5 on the season.

The Pirates were slow out of the gate, dropping two of three doubles matches to head into singles play down 2-1. Bergerson/Clarage (pictured) pulled out the win in #2 doubles to keep the Crusaders from a sweep, winning 8-6 over Davies/Kittrell.

As singles matches got underway it was obvious that the Pirates were going to be in for a fight, but were up to the challenge. Alex Lam (#1) won in a tie-breaker 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 over Will Summers to kick start things in motion for Southwestern. Alexander Reinsch kept the momentum going to win 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) over Garrett Baker in #2 singles. Andy Clarage outlasted Collin Davies in #3 singles to take the first set 7-6 (7-5) and then cruised to the win with a 6-0 victory in the second set.

Jonathan Sandoval earned the win over John Martin in a tie breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, while Alec Bergerson dominated in #5 singles, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. UMHB took the final match as Dax Collison fell to Tevin Ogo 6-1, 6-0.

Southwestern heads to San Antonio for a busy weekend of action at the SCAC Round Robin. They kick off the event on Friday at 3 p.m., facing Austin College.
