Men's Tennis Performs Well at ITA Regionals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Despite having a young team the Southwestern men's tennis team had a solid showing at their final fall event, the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships.

Alex Lam (pictured) entered the tournament as #10 in the regional and showed why he deserved the ranking with first and second round victories in the A-draw singles. He opened the tournament by defeating Drew Reid of UT Tyler 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 and easily defeated Michael McCullough of Hardin-Simmons 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. The wins advanced Lam to sweet 16, pitting him against Erick DelaFuente of Trinity, the #2 seed. Lam played hard but was ultimately bested 6-1, 6-2.

Alexander Reinsch won his opening round match as well, outlasting Colten Espinoza of McMurry 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3. The win moved Reinsch into the second round to face #13 Aaron Skinner of Trinity where he fell 6-2, 6-1.

Dax Collison had a tough draw, being matched up with #7 Kevin Wright to open the meet. He fell 6-0, 6-0 and moved into the consolation bracket. In the consolation round, Collison faced off with Austin Carrola of Schreiner and found his rhythm too late as he fell 6-0, 6-3.

Lam and Reinsch teamed up as Southwestern's only representation in A doubles and dropped their first round contest to Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico of McMurry to end the tournament.

In the B-draw, Jonathan Sandoval got a role to win the consolation bracket. After falling to Ethan LaPlante of UT Tyler 6-4, 6-3, Sandoval regrouped and went on a tear through the consolation bracket, winning five straight including an 8-0 routing of Matt Salazar of Schreiner. Jack Kunde of Austin College was Sandoval's final victim as the match went down to the wire, but Sandoval outlasted Kunde 9-8 (6) for the win.

Alec Bergerson and James Alleyn both received first round byes and then fell in their next contest, Bergerson 6-7(9), 6-3, 10-5 to Jesse Rawlings of Hardin Simmons and Alleyn 6-1, 6-3 to Conor Santillanes of LeTourneau, to drop into the consolation bracket.

Once there, both once again received a bye, but it was Bergerson that made a run winning his next two matches before narrowly falling to Kunde 8-6. Alleyn lost to Sanyal Patel of Austin College 8-6 in the round of 16.

The doubles teams of Bergerson/Alleyn and Collison/Sandoval started strong with each winning their opening match 8-6. Collison/Sandoval fell 9-7 in the second round while Bergerson/Alleyn advanced to the round of eight before falling 8-4.

The ITA Regionals marks the end of the 2011 fall season for the Pirates. They return to competition on February 17th as they play host to Texas Lutheran University at 3pm.
