GEORGETOWN, Texas - It came down to the final singles match and a tie-breaker set for the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne University to defeat the men's tennis team on Saturday 5-4.
Howard Payne took control with three wins in doubles action and put the Pirates trailing 3-0 heading into singles play.
As singles action got underway HPU took a 4-0 advantage when Martinez defeated Alexander Reinsch in #1 singles 6-0, 6-4. Alex Lam began a winning streak for Southwestern with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Toyne in #2 singles and D'Art Bebel continued it with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the #3 slot over Borjas.
Andy Clarage outlasted Le in a hard-fought match in #4 singles that went to a tiebreaker set, winning 5-7, 6-2, 9-7. Alec Bergerson's 6-1, 7-5, win over Hodge in #5 singles brought the Pirates into a tie 4-4 heading into the final match. Andrew Olsson was narrowly defeated in the final singles match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, giving the Yellow Jackets the win.
The loss drops the Pirates to 0-4 in the spring. They host Schreiner on Friday and Texas Lutheran and LeTourneau on Saturday.
