Roy and Ellis Represent the Pirates at the ITA Cup

ROME, Ga. – The Southwestern University men's tennis doubles team of Ashton Ellis and Oscar Roy performed well in taking their first match at the ITA Cup recently held at Berry College in Georgia.

Ellis and Roy won their regional to qualify for the prestigious tournament and were deemed All-Americans as well.

In their first match of the tournament, Ellis and Roy dropped the first set 6-2 to Emory (Ga,) University's Nolan Shah and John Lasanajak, who were the no. 4 overall seed going into the match on Thursday evening.

Ellis and Roy fought back to even the match at one set each with a 6-2 victory of their own in the second stanza for a tiebreaking third set, which they handily won 10-4 to advance to the Round of 16.

Unfortunately, the Pirates' duo could not ride the moment from Thursday into Friday as they were eliminated from the winner's bracket 6-3, 6-3 by Tufts (Mass.) University's Derin Acaroglu and Vuk Vuksanovic, who eventually finished as the tournament runner-up.

Ellis and Roy then found themselves facing off against the no.-2 seeded Matthew Robinson and Christian Settles out of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College. The pair from the California school got the better of Ellis and Roy 6-3, 6-4.

Despite being eliminated in the loser's bracket semifinals, Ellis and Roy did all of Pirates Nation proud representing the team, athletic department, school and community of Georgetown with pride and a vigor to not quit until the final point is scored.
