Senior Alonso Fernandez Clinches Pirates 5-0 Victory to Open SCAC Men's Tennis Championships

SHERMAN, Texas – The second-seeded Southwestern University Pirates men's tennis team opened the 2019 SCAC Championships with a 5-0 victory over the seventh-seeded Centenary Gentlemen.

Southwestern didn't drop a single game, sweeping through doubles with three 8-0 victories. Hunter Bajoit and Carlos Esteban Rodero defeated Nathan Lim and Max Wamsley in the No. 1 spot, Jeremy Wilson and Alonso Fernandez bested Kevin Le and Pius Lau in the No. 2 position, and Tashawn Treadwell took down Divine Martin and Miguel Vasquez in the No. 3.

"I loved the energy in doubles, especially from our No. 2 team today in Jeremy Wilson and Alonso Fernandez," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "They really set the tone for the No. 1 and 3 teams."

In a race for the clinch, Fernandez defeated Lau with a pair of 6-0 sets in the No. 4 spot after Vesko Lekovic defeated Martin with the same score to end the match. The Pirates were shutting out the Gents in each of the other four matches when they ended.

"Vesko played a strong singles match and served at a high level," Porter said. "And it was suiting for Alonso, our lone senior, to get the clinch in what will likely be his final collegiate match. I'm so happy for him and forever grateful he chose to be a Pirate."

Southwestern will play third-seeded Austin College, who defeated sixth-seed Texas Lutheran University 5-0, tomorrow at 9 a.m.
