Men's Tennis Earns Win in Senior Alonso Fernandez's Last Home Match

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates men's tennis team squeegeed the tennis courts after the rain then proceeded to sweep the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders 9-0 in the last home match of the season.

Senior Alonso Fernandez made the most of his final home match, defeating Jake Boles 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot to help the Pirates finish the season a perfect 8-0 at home.

"It was so special and fitting for Alonso, our lone senior, to be the last match on and get a win in his final appearance at home," Head Coach Billy Porter said.

The Pirates opened the match sweeping through doubles with Hunter Bajoit and Carlos Esteban Rodero defeating Brandon Huckabee and Robert Galligan 8-3 in the No. 1 spot. Alexander Joseph and Dean Dulthummon bested Jace Mahan and Cole Weiss 8-1 in the No. 2 spot and Alexis Deimanche and Vesko Lekovic defeated Alex Mackellar and Brian Martin 8-3 in the No. 3 position.

Dimanche carried the momentum over into doubles, defeating Brian Martin in straight sets from the No. 1 spot with a pair of 6-1 victories. Bajoit shut out Galligan with a pair of 6-0 victories in the No. 2 spot.

"Alexis hit the ball very well today, striking more groundstrokes than slices for a change of pace," Porter said. "Hunter played a focused match and avoided having a mental lapse at the beginning of the second set."

Alexander Joseph won a hard-fought first set against Cole Weiss by a score of 7-5 and broke through the second set with a 6-0 victory. Dulthummon followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jace Mahan and Max Pearson defeated Mackellar in straight sets followed by Fernandez's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jake Boles.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 13-4 on the season. Southwestern will travel to play Centenary on Friday, April 12 at 4:00 p.m.
