Pirates Knock Off Howard Payne on the Road

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Southwestern University men's tennis team returned to the Lone Star State and got back to their winning ways, dominating the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on the road to a 9-0 win on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pirates put together a strong showing at doubles beginning with an 8-1 win by senior Grant Gideon and sophomore Dean Dulthummon at one doubles. Senior David Strong and sophomore Tyler Norman followed with a much needed 8-0 win at two doubles.

"David and Tyler needed that win badly after our Oregon trip," said Head Coach Billy Porter. "They looked refocused and reenergized."

Senior AJ Garcia and junior Alonso Fernandez wrapped up the sweep in doubles with an 8-0 win at three doubles.

"Reallly loved what we did at 3 doubles with a new team," said Porter.

In singles action, freshman Nicholai Benko earned his first career win, a 6-0, 6-1 victory, at six singles. Dulthummon clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at two singles while Fernandez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at five singles.

"Great to see Nicholai get his first college win," said Porter.

Gideon earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win by Wilson at No. 4 singles. Norman wrapped the match up wtih a 6-1, 6-0 win at three singles.

Southwestern moves to 5-5 overall and returns to action on Friday as they are home for the first time since March 2nd, welcoming in LeTourneau at 5 PM.
