Pirates Compete at ITA Regionals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southwestern University men's tennis team fought the weather all weekend, but competed well at the 2017 Southwest ITA Regional on the campus of Trinity Univeristy.

In singles competition, sophomore Alexis Dimanche, the No. 2 seed coming into the A Main Draw, moved all the way in to the quarterfinals, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win over Oscar Ferrero of Texas-Tyler followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cody Highsmith of East Texas Baptist. Dimanche also earned a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Jace Akagi-Okuma of Trinity before bowing out to Vinicio Hadlich of Texas-Tyler, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.

Freshman Alec Baskerville played his way into the final 16, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gabe Benitez of Howard Payne, as well as a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win over Ashwin Vaithianathan of Texas-Dallas.

Senior David Strong, senior Grant Gideon, sophomore Dean Dulthummon, and sophomore Tyler Norman all earned first round wins before falling in the next round of the main draw. Norman earned a major upset over No. 5 Jordan Pitts of Trinity, defeating him 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).

In doubles action, a pair of Pirate teams made it to the the quarterfinals in No. 2 seed Dimanche and Gideon and No. 7 seed Dulthummon and Baskerville. Dimanche and Gideon earned an 8-3 win over Granberry and Cabato of Austin College before defeating Livingston and Davis of Hardin-Simmons.

Dulthummon and Baskerville earned an 8-1 win over Jelev and Hernandez of Texas-Dallas followed by an 8-1 win over Le and LaRue of Concordia (TX).
