Pirates split pair of contests on Saturday

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Southwestern University men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday. The Pirates dropped a 6-3 decision to Belhaven, but rebounded with a 9-0 victory over Ozarks.

Southwestern (16-6) had its nine-match winning streak snapped in the opening contest.

The Pirates fell behind early, as the Blazers won two of three doubles matchups.

Southwestern was only able to earn two wins in singles action. NIckoloz Snovely picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top spot, while Nick Farmen was a winner by scores of 6-0, 6-3 at the second position.

Meanwhile, the Pirates cruised to a sweep of the Eagles in the final match of the day.

SU surrendered only four games in the entire match.

Snovely and Grant Gideon earned a 9-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Haluki Nakayama and Alonso Fernandez both registered 6-0, 6-0 triumphs at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.

Southwestern will wrap up regular-season play against Centenary at 11 a.m. Sunday.
