Pirates top Schreiner in battle of regionally-ranked foes

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University men's tennis team pushed its win streak to five matches following an 8-1 win over Schreiner in a battle of regionally-ranked opponents on Saturday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.

The Pirates (11-5), which are ranked 11th in the West Region, won two of three matchups in doubles action to take a 2-1 lead.

Southwestern picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, while the Mountaineers (10-3), who are ranked 20th in the West, captured the victory at the second spot.

The Pirates then earned wins in all six singles tilts, including two that went the distance.

Nick Farmen made quick work of Hoanh Le at the second singles position with a straight-sets victory (6-1, 6-2) to put SU up 3-1.

Grant Gideon then rallied from a first-set loss to upend Joshua Newman in a three-frame thriller (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to make it 4-1.

Haluki Nakayama clinched the match for Southwestern with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph at the fourth spot.

Nickoloz Snovely, who moved up to 13th in the singles rankings for the West Region, logged a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Nick Pena at the top spot. Alonso Fernandez (No. 5 singles) and Neik Khansari (No. 6 singles) also earned victories to finish out the contest.

The Pirates return to the road to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday in Belton. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
