Men's tennis starts California trip with 7-2 loss to Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Southwestern University men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision against Whittier on Friday evening at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.

The Pirates (6-5) fell behind early after dropping two of three doubles matchups.

Southwestern picked up its only win in doubles play at the third position, as Nick Farmen and Rod Khansari teamed up for a victory.

The Poets (3-6) took advantage of an overturned call in the top doubles pairing to seize momentum in the contest.

Whittier then won five consecutive singles tilts to clinch the match, including four that went the distance.

Alonso Fernandez earned the Pirates' lone point in singles play, as he earned outlasted his opponent in a three-set tiebreaker.

Southwestern will meet up with Caltech (3-2) on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CDT) in Pasadena, Calif.
