Tennis Faces Tough Competition

Southwestern tennis continued their dual matches over the weekend. The men went 0-2 while the women went 1-1 in matches against UT Tyler and Texas Lutheran. 

Saturday was a tough day for the men's and  women's tennis as the men lost 9-0 and the women 8-1 to UT Tyler.

The men's team was easily defeated in doubles with Egan Cornachione and Sam McCready (#1) falling to Ybarra and Brown 8-0, Dax Collison and Andy Clarage (#2) being defeated by Karsten and Martinez 8-2, and Jonathan Sandoval and Alec Bergerson (#3) losing to Ward and Kierstead 8-2.

The singles matches did not go much better. Cornachione (#1) lost 6-1, 6-0 to Brown. Clarage (#2) lost 6-1,6-2 to Spencer. After a close first set, McCready (#3) was defeated by Singer 7-5, 6-0. Bergerson (#4) fell to Karsten 6-2, 6-2, Sandoval (#5) was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Timponi and Collison (#6) lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kierstead.

The women's doubles struggled as well. Aimee Blake and Elizabeth Ellis (#1) were defeated 8-1 by Friesenhahn, Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer (#2) lost to Blundell and Payne 8-0, and Sarah Johnson and Marieke Visser (#3) fell 8-0 to Musngi and Warren.

The women scraped for a few games in singles but were only able to secure one win. With a hard fought second set, Hunt (#2) won her match 6-1, 6-4, versus Cole. Blake (#1) fell to Friesenhahn 6-2, 6-1 and Stofer (#3) was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Payne. Krampitz (#4) lost to Warren 6-1, 6-0 while Visser (#5) managed to pick up the second set, but ultimately lost to Evans in a tiebreaker 1-6, 6-4, 10-3. Ellis (#6) picked up a few games in the first set, but ended up losing 6-3, 6-1 to Zagurski.
Sunday's match versus TLU was much closer for the men as they lost 6-3. In doubles, Cornachione and McCready (#1) fought very hard against Peck and Schneider, but unfortunately lost 8-8 (4-7) in a tiebreaker. Clarage and Collison (#2) were defeated by Dizdarevic and Thompson 8-2 while Sandoval and Bergerson (#3) grinded out an 8-6 win against Moon and Flores.
In singles, Cornachione (#1) worked hard to defeat Dizdarevic 6-4, 6-3. Clarage (#2) had a close first set, but fell 6-4, 6-0 to Delcambre. After three rough sets, McCready (#3) took down Peck 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Bergerson (#4) was not as lucky, and fell 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to Thompson in 3 sets and Sandoval (#5) lost 6-0, 6-2 to Schneider. With a closer second set, Collison (#6) fell 6-0, 6-4 to Nelson.
SU women's tennis came out ready to play Sunday morning as they defeated TLU 7-2.
In doubles play, Hunt and Stofer (#2) easily defeated Cook and Moellering 8-1. Johnson and Visser (#3) took down Herrmann and Abell 8-3, but unfortunately Blake and Ellis (#1) fell 8-2 to Vega and Zarr.
The women went full steam into singles with Hunt (#2) easily beating Zarr 6-2, 6-1 and Stofer (#3) following by beating Cook 6-1, 6-1. Blake (#1) lost 6-0, 6-1 to Vega. Krampitz (#4) handled Castillo 6-2, 6-2 and Ellis (#6) effortlessly beat Tatsch 6-0, 6-0. Visser (#5) fought hard to win her tiebreaker 1-6, 6-2 (10-5). 

With the women now 3-2 and the men 2-3, Southwestern tennis will have a 2 well-earned weeks off before they face off against Austin College March 23rd in Sherman.
