Men's Lacrosse Bounces Back, Defeats Wittenberg

Men's Lacrosse Bounces Back, Defeats Wittenberg

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Pirates men's lacrosse team was met with the challenge of bouncing back after a hard loss to the Eastern University Eagles last Saturday.

The Pirates came into their matchup against the Wittenberg Tigers with a 3-1 record while the Tigers sat at 0-2 on the young season.

Southwestern came out firing on all cylinders, putting up five goals in the first quarter thanks to two goals by senior midfielder Tommy Saueressig. In the second quarter, the Tigers began to settle in on defense, allowing three Pirate goals and scoring two of their own. Senior attackman Matt Caldwell added two goals in the second to give the team an 8-3 lead going into halftime.

The Tigers showed fight coming out of halftime and each team scored three goals in the third quarter. Freshman attackman Nate Duncan and Saueressig added goals in the quarter to gain hat tricks in the game. Duncan and Saueressig both ended with four points (3Gs, 1A).

Wittenberg brought the game as close as 12-9 with 6:39 left in the contest. A huge fast-break goal by senior defensive-midfielder Ryan Sambogna would give the Pirates all the momentum they needed to ride out their lead and close the game with a 14-9 victory.

Men's Lacrosse returns to Varsity Field on Thursday, March 9th at 7:00 PM for a rematch with Gwynedd Mercy.
