Men's Lacrosse Overpowers Centenary 23-4

Shreveport, Louisiana - The Southwestern Pirates departed in the early hours of Sunday morning to take on the Centenary College Gentleman. The Pirates' lagged coming out of the gate against the Gents'. However, they would assert their dominance in the latter half of the second quarter. The Pirates ran away with the game, and the contest ended in an overwhelming 23-4 victory.

The Gents' goaltender performed well in the first quarter, only allowing two goals and seeing a barrage of shots from the Pirates'. Blake Sitterly and Matthew Caldwell opened up the scoring, but they would be the only ones, ending the first quarter 2-2.

Fr. Carter Woods got the start in cage for the Pirates and had a rocky opening similar to the rest of his squad. However, Woods settled in and had five saves in his first game as a collegiate goaltender. In the second half, Jr. Jonah Heaton saw time in the goal as well as Sr. Lee Stone – they each recorded one save on the day.

The Pirates' defense shut down the Gents' offense outside of the first quarter with only one goal allowed in the second half and a shutout fourth quarter. There was no shortage of caused turnovers for the Pirate defense, Sr. LSM Tyler Santos and Jr. defenseman Will Thompson forced three turnovers apiece. Fr. Caleb Sowell and Jr. Ryan Sambogna had two CTs as well.

The Pirates' had ten different goal scorers, but it was midfielder Blake Sitterly and lefty attackman Matthew Caldwell doing the bulk of the work for the offense. Caldwell had a career- high of six goals and matched his career-high in assists with three for a total of nine points. Sitterly also racked up a career-high of six goals with one assist added. Together they accounted for sixteen of the Pirates' goals. Other goal scorers include Sr. Benjamin Libby (1), Jr. Jack Carolan (1), So. Axel Aymond (2), and Fr. Cade McDonald (3).

It took some time for the Pirates' to shake off the five hour bus ride from Georgetown, but once they did there was no hope left for the Gents'.

Men's lacrosse hosts their first home game of the season against Piedmont College on Thursday, March 3rd. at 7:00pm.
