Pirates win season opener at Hendrix

Pirates win season opener at Hendrix

Southwestern used a steady stream of offense to take their season opener in Conway, AR on Saturday, defeating Hendrix College 10-6.

Hendrix got on the board first after a back and forth first quarter, scoring with 6:34 remaining to go up 1-0. The Pirates immediately had the response, however, and scored two goals in the final 3:30 to lead 2-1 after the first.

Less than a minute into the second, Matthew Montagne scored his second unassisted goal of the game. Just two minutes later, Matt Zagurski found Brandon Hanley to put SU up 4-1. Hendrix snuck one home at the eight minute mark, but Zagurski and Jake Ham scored in the final minute of the half to head into the locker room up 6-2.

Hendrix opened the third with a goal and the teams traded scores throughout the remainder of the game as Southwestern hung on to a comfortable lead to close out the win.

Montagne lead the charge offensively with two goals and three assists. Zagurski added in one goal and two assists and Hanley two goals. Charlie Fisher recorded 10 saves in goal with five ground balls while Elliot Allen and Dakota Skinner caused four turnovers each on the defensive line.

Southwestern starts the year at 1-0 and returns to action on Friday at 5 p.m. at Rhodes College.
