Men’s lacrosse edged out in Birmingham

Southwestern fell behind early in the second half and couldn't make up enough ground as they narrowly fell to Birmingham Southern College on Saturday afternoon.

Jackson Timian got SU rolling with a goal just over a minute into the game to put the Pirates on top, but BSC rattled off three goals to take a 3-1 lead with nine to play. Matt Zagurski scored unassisted with 2:28 to go in the quarter to pull the Pirates within one, 3-2.

Jordan Riggs tied the game for Southwestern to open the second quarter and after trading goals with the Panthers, BSC closed the half with back to back goals within 30 seconds of each other to take a two goal lead, 6-4, into the break.

Just as they had all game, Southwestern was the first on the board in the third quarter as Everett Barger found Zagurski who put it in the back of the net to bring Southwestern within one, 6-5, with 11:37 to play. BSC had the answer for every Pirate goal in the third quarter and maintained a two goal lead heading into the final frame.

It was BSC that started the fourth with a goal, taking advantage of two man-up opportunities to push their lead to four, 10-6. Matthew Montagne, assisted by Jackson Timian, scored with 2:39 remaining, but it wasn't enough for a comeback as the clock wound to a close.

The Pirates trailed 39-22 in shots and 26-24 in ground balls while committing four more turnovers in the loss, 18-14. SU was led by Montagne and Zagurski who posted two goals each while Charlie Fisher posted 10 saves on 20 shots. BSC's Thomas Grove led with three goals.

Southwestern finally has a chance to play at home as they host Johnson & Wales on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
