Pirates No Match for Strong Berry Squad

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University men's lacrosse team struggled on Saturday afternoon as they fell to a strong Berry Vikings squad by the score of 15-4 on a cold and windy day at Varsity Field.

The Vikings out shot the Pirates 38-23 while Southwestern had a 29-23 advantace in ground balls. The Pirates had 23 turnovers including 10 in the first quarter to 18 by Berry. Southwestern was 10 of 22 in face offs and 13 of 18 in clear attempts.

A 6-0 advantage in the first quarter put Berry ahead as Southwestern could never quite recover from the deficit. The two teams were even in the second quarter as SU went into half down 8-2. However, another big quarter, this time a 4-0 third quarter, put the game out of reach for good as the Vikings cruised to the 15-4 win.

Senior Matt Amerie scored a pair of goals while junior Everett Barger and sophomore Zach Taylor each added one. Junior Jared Welsh had two assists while freshman Zac Asbury added one. 

Senior Parker Rankin and sophomore Bailey Middleton had two caused turnovers while junior Kai Knight-Turcan and senior Sean Smith each had four ground balls. Junior Kyle Kuberski had 10 saves in the loss while freshman Spencer Au added three saves and freshman Patrick Sinclair had one.

Berry's Chris Berchock had four goals and one assists to lead the way for the visitors. Justin Westbrook added three goals.

Southwestern falls to 0-2 and will hit the road to Sewanee, Tenn. on Friday as they will take on Piedmont College in neutral site contest beginning at 6 PM.
