Men’s Lacrosse loses to UMass-Boston in Overtime

The Pirates lost a heartbreaker in overtime against the UMass-Boston Beacons, taking their second loss of the season after going on a six-game winning streak.

The contest got off to a defensive start, with both goalies playing exceptionally well. The Pirates fired 30 shots in the first two quarters, but the Beacons' goaltender stopped 14 shots, only allowing three goals for the half. The Beacons' had 25 shots of their own but Pirate goaltender Nate Blair withstood the barrage letting in six goals in the first half.

The Pirates turned the ball over 16 times in the first and only cleared about 55 percent due to their frantic pace of play and a relentless Beacons ride. Underperforming in these two stat columns saw the first half ending at 6-3 in favor of the Beacons; Cody Foster scored two of the Southwestern goals, with Blake Sitterly scoring the other.

The second half turned into an absolute scoring festival. The Pirates went on a 4-0 run early in the third. Even Long-Stick Midfielders Tyler Santos and Aidan Gildea got in on the action for the offense. The Pirates pumped in eight goals in the third quarter, albeit the Beacons scored five goals of their own. The third quarter onslaught of the Pirates helped them tie the game up at 11-11 going into the fourth quarter. The Pirates' cut down drastically on the turnovers in the second half, helping them stay in the ball game and make the most of their offensive possessions.

Another high scoring quarter ensured, each team scoring four goals apiece and ending the fourth in a 15-15 tie going into overtime. The Pirates' were able to win the final faceoff and had several opportunities to score, but a Pirate turnover gave the Beacons the ball on offense. Surprisingly the Beacons rushed their shot which Blair easily saved. Despite Blair's save, the game would end on a failed clear from the Pirates. The Beacons cashed in on their opportunity and finished the game 16-15.

The Pirates' will look to bounce back when they take on the Curry College Colonels tomorrow, March 16th at 7:00 PM.
