Men’s lacrosse hosts first annual Andrew Webb Alumni Game

Men’s lacrosse hosts first annual Andrew Webb Alumni Game

The 2015 Lacrosse Alumni game was different than those in the past.  Not on the scoreboard, as the Alumni always manage to be able to find a way to win (commandeering the scoreboard usually does the trick after the game), but because this year Southwestern lacrosse honored one of their own, in Andrew Webb.

Webb '09 was a pioneer on the Southwestern lacrosse club team and passed away last January from brain cancer.  In honor of Webb, the alumni game was renamed the Andrew Webb Alumni Lacrosse game this year.  His parents were kind enough to come up and share the day as alumni and current players alike honored the life of Andrew.

Over 30 alumni made it back to play or "coach" on the sidelines for the game on a beautiful day, and everyone received a shirt with the number 48 and "WEBB" on the back.  In fact, the final score on this day was a win for all of us as the alumni honored Webb on the scoreboard with his name instead of theirs, and the final score reflecting his number as well.

Andrew was indeed a rare soul, larger than life, and played with a free spirit, just like he lived his life.  He will forever be a part of the lacrosse program at Southwestern and each year SU will wear an AW sticker on their helmets in his honor.  He set the tone for the other guys on the field, and more than anything else, played and lived with a smile on his face that was contagious.

"To see so many people come back this past weekend, including his parents made this an experience that will not be soon forgotten," shared Head Coach Bill Bowman.  Afterwards, everyone was able to head over to Coach Bowman's house for fellowship and food, networking, and of course, stories that keep getting better as time goes by.

Southwestern opens the season on the road on February 7th against Hendrix at noon.
