Pirate Offense Explodes for 20 in Win Over Marian

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern Univeristy men's lacrosse team exploded for 20 goals, including seven goals in the fourth quarter, as they ran past the Marian Sabres for a 20-10 win on Tuesday evening at Varsity Field.

The Pirates out shot Marian 47-32 including 51 ground balls. Southwestern turned the ball over 28 times, but was able to force 21 Sabre turnovers. The Pirates also dominated face offs, going 24-for-32. The Pirates were also 2 of 5 in man up situations.

Marian jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Southwestern responded with four straight goals from four different goal scorers. Junior Jared Welsh led off the scoring followed by freshman Zac Asbury. Freshman Phin Sprague and junior Kai Knight-Turcan closed the quarter with goals as they moved to the second quarter ahead 4-2.

After a Sabre goal, the Pirates scored three straight goals from Asbury, senior Matt Amerie, and junior Everett Barger pushed the Pirates ahead 7-2. Marian cut the deficit to four to set up another three consecutive goals from Southwestern from Asbury, Barger, and Amerie.

Marian closed the half with a goal, but the Pirates held a 10-4 lead going into the break.

The Sabres cut the game down two four to start the second half, but Southwestern closed the half with goals, again, from Amerie, Barger, and Asbury to move back ahead 13-6.

Marian got it as close as five in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates finished with seven goals in the final period to finish with a 20-10 win. Amerie, Welsh, and Asbury added to their goal totals while freshman Jacob Hamilton added a pair of goals.

Asbury had a huge game, finishing with five goals, six assists, seven ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Amerie also added five goals and an assists while Barger had three goals and two assists. Welsh had two goals and three assists while Knight-Turcan had a goal and three assists.

Along with Asbury, junior Steven Mesquiti finished with two caused turnovers while David Miller led the way with nine ground balls. Freshman Achilles Armendariz had seven ground balls while senior Sean Smith had six.

In goal, junior Kyle Kuberski had five saves in the win while freshman Patrick Sinclair had a save in the final minutes.

Garrett Houilhan had three goals and three assists in the contest to lead Marian while Gavin Taquino had 15 saves in goal.

The Pirates move to 2-3 overall and will return to action at home on Friday as they take on Birmingham-Southern at 7 PM.
