COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Pirates went on a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter after trailing the first three quarters, but wasn't quite enough as they fell 12-8 to Babson College on Friday night.
The Pirates fell behind early as Babson opened the game on a 4-0 run and extended their lead with four more goals in the second quarter to lead 8-1 at halftime.
Babson started the second half hot as well, scoring three goals to increase their lead to ten, 11-1, with 4:22 to play in the third quarter. Southwestern's Matthew Montagne scored his first collegiate goal with 2:32 left in the first, assisted by Carter Cowan, but Babson quickly answered a minute later to keep SU down ten, 12-2, heading into the final quarter.
Refusing to go down without a fight, the Pirates but together a fourth quarter surge that could only be stopped by the final buzzer. Montagne kicked things off with his second goal of the game three minutes into the quarter and Michael Villa followed it up with a goal a minute and a half later, assisted by Jeremy Tufnell.
Tyler Downing followed suit, assisted by Austin Fox and less than 30 seconds later Villa added another to pull SU within six, 12-6. Babson was beginning to sweat and Southwestern just pressed harder as Timian punched home two goals, the last with 1:32 left on the clock. Time would expire to keep Southwestern's run to snagging the lead as SU fell 12-8.
Villa, Montagne and Timian all recorded two goals each to lead while Montagne added in two assists. Timian led the Pirates in ground balls while Matt Zagurski and Dakota Skinner caused two turnovers each. AJ Cole posted five saves in 23 minutes in goal while Charlie Fisher had four in 36 minutes.
