Pirates remain unbeaten in home thriller

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern dominated the second half, scoring three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to win 7-6 over Rhodes College.

Rhodes took an early lead, scoring their first goal just a minute and a half into the game. The Pirates responded with back to back goals, one from Jackson Timian unassisted and one by Austin Fox assisted by Matt Zagurski. The Lynx posted one more with 3:25 to play in the quarter to tie the count 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second, RC scored two in the opening three minutes to lead 4-2. Tyler Downing's goal, assisted by Alex Michael, cut Rhodes' lead to one, but the Lynx posted one more with two minutes left in the half to push their lead back to two, 5-3, at halftime.

Southwestern came out incredibly focused in the second half and needed just 49 seconds to score their first goal as Kyle Anderson barreled down the middle of the field to score unassisted. As the defensive intensity increased so did the physical play as both teams struggled offensively until Rhodes extended their lead back to two, 6-4, on a man-up goal by Merrill Charette with 4:50 left in the third quarter.

Downing kicked off the scoring spree one minute into the fourth with an unassisted goal. Carter Cowan, assisted by Austin Fox, scored in a perfectly executed clear by the Pirates with 12:41 to play to tie the game 6-6. Fox punched home the game winner with 5:47 to go, assisted by Timian, and the Pirate defense took over from there to hold Rhodes scoreless.

Daniel Donovan earned his second win of the season with 12 saves while Ross Warkentin collected six groundballs and caused four turnovers to lead the defense. Downing and Fox had two goals each to lead the offense that out-shot Rhodes 32-26. SU successfully converted on 19 of the 20 clears and won the turnover battle 21-25.

With the win Southwestern remains undefeated at 2-0. They remain at home to face Millsaps College on Friday night at 7 p.m.
