Pirates emerge from fog with win over Piedmont

SEWANEE, Tenn. – A dense fog descended on the field as the game got underway but nothing could stop the Pirates (1-2) as they defeated Piedmont College (0-2) 11-9 Friday evening.

Kai Knight-Turcan opened the scoring with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the game. Piedmont answered with a man-up goal three minutes later, but Jordan Riggs sent Southwestern into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead after scoring with just two minutes to play in the first quarter.

Both teams scored three goals in the second quarter, allowing Southwestern to take a one goal advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Zac Asbury took the game over at the start of the second half rattling off three straight goals to give Southwestern an 8-4 lead.

Piedmont attempted a comeback but SU was just too strong as they tightened the reigns defensively to allow just one fourth quarter goal.

Asbury led with five goals and one assist in the win. Kyle Kuberski earned the win in goal for the Pirates.

Southwestern remains in Tennessee to face Sewanee on Saturday.
